Ulster Bank Ulster Schools Cup Update: 12th May

Robin Walsh

Two teams are already through to the quarter finals of the Ulster Bank Ulster Schools Cup but disruption through the weather and examinations has meant that four teams have yet to play their first round matches.

Down High School and Regent House booked their places in the last eight with wins over Friends School and Lurgan College respectively but the first round ties between Belfast Royal Academy and Antrim Grammar School and Larne Grammar and Sullivan Upper have yet to get under way.

Holders Limavady Grammar are safely through to the second round with a convincing seven-wicket win over Bangor Grammar. With nine of last year’s squad again available they brushed aside Bangor by seven wickets with skipper Ross Allen taking five wickets for six runs. At one stage Bangor were 54 for 4 but the left-arm Eglinton spinner and Stephen Kennedy with 2-20 saw the Co Down side slump dramatically to 57 all out. After a bumpy start Jamie W Millar and Jamie P Millar saw the holders safety through with knocks of 27 and 23 respectively.
