Lagan Valley Steels T20 Cup 2023 Winners- Waringstown CC

Sep 10, 2023 | General News

The Lawn, Waringstown hosted the eagerly awaited rearranged final where Waringstown got over the line with one ball to spare thanks to a straight six from Graeme Hume.

CIYMS skipper John Matchett won the toss and elected to bat first and would’ve been delighted at his team’s excellent start with the opening duo of Ross Adair and Christopher Dougherty putting on a 50-run partnership. Soon after the 50 was up, James Cameron-Dow struck removing Dougherty and then Adair departed 4 balls later bowled by Waringstown’s captain Greg Thompson. Waringstown bowled tightly and took regular wickets as CIYMS posted 117-8 from their 20 overs. Seby Best finished with excellent figures of 3-24, Greg Thompson chipped in with a tight four-over spell taking 2-14 and JCD and Rory Bessell took 1 wicket apiece.

118 runs were required for Waringstown to win and lift the LVS T20 Cup on their home ground. The chase ebbed and flowed as momentum switched between the sides but it turned out to be Waringstown’s day as Hume hit a winning six off the penultimate ball of the match after a tight 4 balls of death bowling by Tyron Koen.

Congratulations to Greg Thompson and his Waringstown side in what was a brilliant end to the 2023 season in the rare and glorious sunshine. Commiserations to CIYMS and we cannot wait to see them represent Ireland at the European T20 competition. Thanks to Waringstown CC for hosting the final and to all of the staff and supporters who turned out on the day and to NCU President Brian Walsh and LVS Managing Director Tommy Anderson for presenting the trophy.
