Andrew White, Chair of National Men’s Selectors, believes that the T20 International squad announced today for the upcoming GS Holding T20I Tri-Series in Dublin is one of most talented and dynamic Irish sides he has seen in recent times, with a focus on providing options to international captain Gary Wilson as his side builds towards the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier next month.
The 15-player squad was selected for the T20 International Tri-Series starting on Sunday between Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands.
White said:
“There were a number of players really unfortunate to miss out on this squad, which goes to show the quality and depth of players we are developing in this format of the game in Ireland. It’s certainly a talented and dynamic team, and one which provides Gary Wilson [Ireland T20I captain] with plenty of options as he heads into an important few weeks.”
“It is also a squad that contains a stronger fielding unit than we’ve potentially had in the past. You have a lot of three-dimensional cricketers in there, which is important in the modern game.”
“We have just completed a five-day training camp which brought together 25 of the best players playing in Ireland in this format and was very beneficial and served to solidify the selectors thinking.”
“It was great to see the likes of Harry Tector confirm his obvious talent and demonstrate that he has the game to perform at this level, while we also welcome Jacob Mulder back into the international fold. Both he and Gareth Delany offer leg-spinning options which will be important as we look forward – both Jacob and Gareth have performed well this season and are deserving of their selection. We look forward to giving David Delany an opportunity at international level – he has the raw talent, and offers us something different in terms of his pace – he’s obviously been on our radar for a little while now and so we’re pleased he will get a chance next week.”
“We’d like to extend our thanks to YMCA for allowing us to utilise their excellent facilities over the last week – this has been crucial in giving the guys good preparation time ahead of the Qualifier, especially with the postponement of the Euro T20 Slam this year, and the loss of the T20 Inter-Provincial Festival due to poor weather in August.”
