Ulster Schools’ U19 Cricket Trial at Ballyclare HS

Simon Thompson

The sun was shining all day for the Ulster Schools’ U19 Cricket Trial on Friday 10 th June, held for the first time at Ballyclare High School’s Hollinger Park. The extremely wet conditions in the days leading up to the trial meant the wicket was damp but it would be a good test for the techniques of the leading Ulster Schools’ batsmen.

Adam Berry’s (MCB) side batted first and were in trouble early on losing wickets to M Best (Campbell) and Sam Shannon (RBAI), J Hunter (Ballyclare HS) held the innings together before being dismissed by C McMoran’s (Campbell) first ball. At about 75 for 7 and batting at 9, Ballyclare HS’s Simon Beattie put in an excellent batting display against the likes of Graeme McCarter (Foyle and L’Derry) and Ben Wylie (RBAI) to score his maiden fifty and put a respectable 132 from 40 overs on the board.

Graeme McCarter’s side getting the best out of a drying wicket took immediate control through the steady opening batting of Jordan McClerkin (BRA) who was retired on making his fifty. Ben Wylie (RBAI) looked in control and led his team home with about one over to spare.

This Ulster Schools’ cricket trial double up as an Irish U19 trial with ICU selectors J Bray, B Walsh and R Eagleson all present.
