Refurbishment of the cricket square at The Castle Grounds

Robert Best

Bancroft Amenities Ltd a Manchester based firm specializing in sportturf particularly cricket have won the contract to refurbish the cricket square at The Castle Grounds, 690 Antrim Road, Belfast.

The works will comprise of stripping of the existing surface with a Koro Field Top Marker before leveling works and the import of new loam is placed on the square. Boughton County Loam has been selected for the project.

The design will allow cricket to be played on the square next season, any deeper construction than 50mm of new loam will not allow the new surface to mature in time to permit cricket next season.

Bancroft Amenities Ltd have worked at many of England’s premier venues and have recently completed projects at Old Trafford home of Lancashire County Cricket Club where they have constructed 11 new wickets and refurbished 5 more, effectively allowing the square to be turned through 90°, also Malahide cricket Club in Dublin constructing the new square that will host Ireland matches in the future when phase 2 of the project is completed.

Bancroft’s are due to start works on the square at Castle Fields on Monday 4th July, fellow groundsmen or club committee members are more than welcome to call at the site and see us working. We will be more than happy to discuss the project. Given the dependency on the weather our plans are always subject to change but we intend stripping the square on the Monday and starting to rebuild on the Tuesday, “Once we have opened up the site and exposed it to the elements we always crack on with the project, especially when involve clay loam”, says John Bancroft From Bancroft Amenities Ltd.

Later in the week Bancroft will be installing a N.T.P math pitch at Roughfort for Academy.
Our cricket representative Dan Humphreys will be available to discuss cricket matters, should you wish to make an appointment to see Dan please contact the office to make arrangements.
