Newstalk Inter-Provincial Championship - Northern Knights v NW Warriors - Day 1 Report and Scorecard

Barry Chambers

Shane Getkate took the bowling honours on the first day of the Newstalk Inter-Provincial Championship game at Stormont between the Northern Knights and NW Warriors. The former Ireland Under 19 star switched Unions in an attempt to gain higher recognition, and fully justified the move on his Knights debut by taking 4 for 25 on his new home ground of Stormont.

He removed NW opener David Barr (1) in his first over of the day, and returned to dismiss the dangerous Johnny Thompson (40) and Ricky-Lee Dougherty (0) in the space of three balls. Getkate then ended the Warriors innings by having Gary McClintock (20) caught behind.

Scott Campbell was the batting hero for the NW, top scoring with 51 from 98 balls (7 fours) before being dismissed just before lunchtime by the impressive James Cameron-Dow, who claimed 1 for 49 in his 20 overs. Campbell, a late replacement for the injured Iftikhar Hussain batted with great confidence and patience, scoring all round the wicket with a succession of drives, pulls and cuts.

Andrew Riddles (27) was the other contributor of note in a batting display which promised so much at times, only for the batsmen to play a series of injudicious strokes.

In reply, the Knights closed the day on 143 for 5, just 47 in arrears. Knights opener Nick Larkin made the most of two reprieves, including being dropped before he had scored, to top score with 40. Pace-man Craig Young dismissed former Bready team-mate Chris Dougherty (17) to get the Warriors a much needed breakthrough. Ernest Kemm trapped Larkin lbw, and the Warriors were given a real boost when former Zimbabwean Test star Craig Ervined dragged on a short ball from Johnny Thompson to go for 21.

Lee Nelson made 10 before being dismissed by the impressive Tabish Khan, and the Warriors were right back in the contest when Thompson had James Shannon (7) caught behind. The total at that stage was 125 for 5, and it could and perhaps should have been 125 for 6, as Nathan Waller was dropped behind - that miss could prove crucial in a bowler dominated match. Knights skipper Andrew White is still there unbeaten on 34, and with strength in depth in their batting will be hoping to build a sizeable lead on day two.
