Ulster Bank League Section 1 Roundup - 3rd June 2014

Gordon Scott

Leaders Woodvale maintained their position at the top of Ulster Bank League Section 1 with an important if narrow victory over Derriaghy at Ballygomartin Road with professional Sujit Khalbor making a telling all round contribution with 46 and 3-58. Sam Fleming, back in action after injury, made 59 with Jonathan Burnside adding 43 in a total of 244-8. In reply the visitors were heavily reliant on Kaushik Aphale whose stylish 83 almost led his side home but, on a turning wicket, home spinner Richard McBride with 3-34 proved the match winner in an exciting climax.

Second placed Lurgan found the Co. Down air at The Meadow  to their liking with a massive total of 308-5 largely due to a whirlwind innings of 94 off 45 balls from John Guy who was well supported by Niranjan Godbole (92) and skipper Bruce Topping (52). With the exception of Lee Connor with an aggressive 63 Dundrum's reply was never a threat with a final tally of 166.

Carrickfergus returned to form after recent setbacks with an emphatic win at Middle Road over Templepatrick. The home side's total of 266-4 was largely due to former international Ryan Eagleson (70), Indrajeet Kamtekar (64) and Jamie Holmes (51). Eagleson (3-15) and Kamtekar (3-10) also dominated with the ball when the visitors were dismissed for a disappointing 126 with only Jay Hunter resisting with 34.

Second placed Cliftonville made their visit to Uprichard Park a successful one largely thanks to a dominating performance from their Indian professional Avadhoot Dandekar. The opener shared two fifty partnerships with Phil Mulholland (29) and David Munn (25) before being dismissed in the 48th over for 124. The visitor’s final total of 247-9 was beginning to look vulnerable when Bangor reached 100-1 with Kuda Samunderu having completed a stylish half century. However a brilliant catch at deep long on by Munn dismissed Samunderu and the home side's innings petered out to a total of 186 with Andrew Nixon (43) maintaining his good recent form. Ian Latham took the bowling honours for Cliftonville with excellent figures of 5-50.

Finally Holywood gained their first League win with a comfortable victory over Downpatrick at Seapark. Despite being without key players in Philip McCormick and David Kennedy the home side restricted their opponents to a modest 168 with only Ryan Smith (43) making a worthwhile contribution. A feature of this innings was the return to Senior action of Michael Shannon after a lapse of 5 years but the former international proved his class with 1-28 off 10 overs. In reply Holywood were always in command and Richard Kerrigan's unbeaten 78 saw his side home by 7 wickets.

On Sunday in a match rearranged from a washout on 5th May Templepatrick gained their first League win of the season when surprising front runners Lurgan at The Cloughan. The home side set an imposing target of 253-4 with Bob Homani top scoring with an unbeaten 112 and Jay Hunter (32) & Arthur Campbell also on 32 providing good support. In reply the visitors were dismissed for a paltry 120 with Rhydall Davies leading the charge with 4-32.
