Runs Galore in Ulster Bank Schools Cup

In what is thought to be a record in schools cup cricket, Friends School have hit a remarkable 308 runs in just 25 overs in their first round Ulster Bank Cup tie.

The Lisburn side lost just two wickets as they raced to their total at over 12 runs an over with Peter Ferguson hitting a mammoth 172 not out and Patrick Cochrane an undefeated 79.  Friends then bowled out Dalriada for only 35 to register a 273-run victory.

Cup holders Grosvenor Grammar School are safely through to the second round with a nine wicket win over Ballymena Academy and Campbell College defeated their Belfast rivals Methodist College by seven wickets.

The first round results were:

  • Lurgan College 110 (J Harrison 59, M Darling 3-17, J Hunter 3-17), Ballyclare High School 111-9 (J McKinstry 27), Ballyclare won by 1 wicket.
  • Friends School 308-2 (P Ferguson 172 no, P Cochrane 79 no), Dalriada School 35 (R Barnes 4-0, C Black 3-9), Friends won by 273 runs.
  • Campbell College Seconds 119-7 (G Morrow 89 no), Royal School Armagh 121 for 5 (A Wright 40, A Marshall 31), Armagh won by 5 wickets.
  • Regent House 154-4 (P McKibbon 48, G Wright 32), RBAI Seconds 105 (O Roberts 3-16), Regent won by 49 runs.
  • Ballymena Academy 66-5, Grosvenor Grammar School 69-1 (J Gibson 41 no), Grosvenor won by 9 wickets.
  • RBAI 115 (A Knape 29no), Banbridge Academy 70 (A Knape 3-10), RBAI won by 45 runs.
  • Bangor Grammar School 98-9, BRA 99-9, BRA won by 1 wicket.
  • Limavady Grammar School 131-7, Foyle College 72 (S Kenny 3-23), Limavady won by 59 runs.
  • Down High School 123 (R Black 3-15), Strabane Academy 124-1 (L Hayes 59 no, J Robinson 55), Strabane won by 9 wickets.
  • Friends School Seconds 98, Grosvenor Grammar School Seconds 99-2 ( D Hand 59 no), Grosvenor won by 8 wickets.
  • Royal School Dungannon 65, Belfast High School 66-2, Belfast High School won by 8 wickets.
  • Sullivan Upper 184-3 (J Matchett 79, McCord 48), Larne Grammar School 97 (M Adair 3-4, J Matchett 3-12), Sullivan won by 87 runs.
  • Methodist College 138-7 (M McIvor 40, F Wallace 29), Campbell College 139-3 (P Park 29 no, P Beverland 29), Campbell College won by 7 wickets.
